I received my J.D. Degree from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1965. I was awarded an E. Barrett Prettyman Fellowship at Georgetown Law Center in Washington, D.C., in Criminal Law and Trial Advocacy and was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar in 1965. Upon completion of the Fellowship, I worked as a Staff Attorney with the Legal Aid Agency for the District of Columbia. (Public Defenders Office).
My Colorado practice began in 1969 in the District Attorneys Office where I became the Chief Trial Deputy for the Fourth Judicial District. I then went into private practice in 1971. My practice has been exclusively in the family law area for the past 25 years.
I’ve lectured locally and statewide at bar associations seminars on divorce related topics on numerous occasions and have been annually selected by my peers for recognition in Best Lawyers in America, a nationwide publication for the last 10 years. I have been honored by my peers through their listing of me in Colorado Super Lawyers. for the last several years. I have also been the recipient of the annual Award for Professionalism by the El Paso County Bar Association on two occasions – the first year it was awarded, and then as a member of a group of four persons a few years later.
My philosophy is straight forward. Learn the facts of the case; knowledge is power. Always be a strong advocate for the legitimate goals of your client; but don’t let yourself be a battering ram for anyone. Treat the other side with courtesy. There is no justification for any lawyer acting like a “junk yard dog” in a divorce case. Your clients and their spouses are entitled to respectful treatment from the lawyers on both sides of the case.
Let me preface what I have to say next by telling you that I’ve both prosecuted and defended in death penalty cases. I mention that experience – the toughest trial work there is - to give assurance to you that I am not afraid of trial... however, here is what I advise: “Stay out of the courtroom, if you can!” It truly is the least suitable place to work out issues in a divorce, unless there are major custody issues. Believe me, I can be more creative and get a better final result for you in most cases through mediation, or mediation/arbitration, than in a courtroom.
